WHY Use Frozen Semen??

To anyone involved in the horse breeding industry, the advantages of frozen semen artificial insemination are becoming more and more apparent. Many owners of competition stallions are finding it more efficient and economical to have their stallions collected during the non-breeding season, and the semen stored and available for use during the normal breeding season. This allows the stallion's focused attention on competition rather than breeding.

Stored frozen semen can also be used to continue a stallion's breeding season in the event of injury or illness. Again, interruption of the breeding season can be avoided, and tremendous financial loss of both the stallion and mare owners is eliminated.  This is a  co-owned venture by Debbie LaMay & Katherine Kareus let us take this time to introduce ourselves to you and let you know that we are here for you collection & freezing needs.

We are now freezing semen and doing embryo vitrification's call for more detailed infor or check back for updates soon!
Frozen semen collections are available upon demand with proper notice. Test freezing of semen with a variety of freezing extenders is required on all new stallions to guarantee a good quality product. State of the art technology and advanced skills are a prerequisite to properly collect and process equine semen for freezing. Equine Cyro offers stallion owners a complete frozen semen storage and distribution program. The success of any frozen semen program is dependent on semen handling, prior and during, the freezing process as well as receiving and insemination the mare. Equine Cyro is undergoing the process to become fully equipped to transport frozen semen straws world-wide with the appropriate import/export quality assurances

Frozen Semen Distribution

 Frozen Semen Distribution

Nobody is better equipped to handle your stallions frozen semen.

Service is what makes the difference. Equine Cyro offers stallion owners a complete frozen semen storage and distribution program.

Our distribution program is designed to relieve the stallion owner of many of the burdens associated with managing a transported semen breeding program. As a stallion owner, you devote your time and energy to promoting your stallion and booking mares. Our distribution service eliminates the scheduling problems typically associated with shipping cooled semen. Once you have booked the mares, our experienced professional staff handles all the details of the shipments and breedings. If you wish, your mare owners or their veterinarians may contact us directly to arrange shipments or we can process shipment requests directly from you. The choice is yours. Either way, our staff is here to process the orders and provide technical assistance so that semen is shipped the same day as the request is received. All of our frozen semen shipped express with reputable carriers such as FedEx.

Our laboratory at Equine Cyro is equipped with an abundant inventory of nitrogen shipping containers, all housed in special protective shipping cartons. Each and every shipment contains detailed information about the semen including post-thaw semen quality and handling and thawing instructions. Also available upon request are sterile non-spermicidal insemination kits. And our technical staff is always available for consultation with the receiving veterinarians.

As a previous SBS affiliated laboratory, Equine Cryo has set the standard for quality. Computerized, programmable cell freezers enable our technicians to develop customized freezing protocols for each individual stallion. Our quality control programs are enhanced through the use of state-of-the-art computerized sperm motility analysis. This objective evaluation provides a permanent, accurate record of post-thaw semen quality from each ejaculate of semen frozen

To retain viability for the maximum amount of time, frozen semen must be maintained properly. At Equine Cryo laboratories, frozen semen is maintained in numerous state of the art, high capacity, cryogenic containers. The storage vessels work like giant insulated thermos bottles. Minimizing evaporation of liquid nitrogen thereby maximizing container-holding time. The liquid level of all the tanks is measured weekly and nitrogen added at no more than two-week intervals as needed. Monitoring nitrogen evaporation rates allows our personnel to detect in advance a tank which is losing holding time and replace it before any of the valuable semen it contains is in jeopardy.

In the unlikely event of a tank failure (loss of vacuum), we can immediately transfer all semen from that tank to other tanks. One or more 180 or 240 liter pressurized nitrogen delivery tanks are always on hand.

Equine Cyro  was previously Select Breeders Affiliate Laboratory offering the same quality freezing process that set the industry standard for frozen semen, so rest assured your stallions future is still in good hands.  We offer a personalized breeding program, boasting premier facilities and services to the horse industry. Their experienced staff specializes in reproductive programs related to shipping and receiving frozen semen. Frozen storage and distribution is available at our state-of-the-art facility.

Conception rates are amazingly exceptional.....

These results are from Dr. Ed Squires of Colorado State University

  • Fresh Semen 78%
  • Cooled Semen 65%
  • Frozen Semen 76%
  • Also a lower occurrence of early embryonic death with frozen semen vs. cooled.  Cooled was 17% and frozen 10%

Additionally, semen from valuable stallions can be used to continue production after the stallion has become too old to breed, the desire to geld, or even after his death.

Finally, stallion owners wishing to expand their stallion's market internationally, find frozen semen to be the practical solution to worldwide shipping with no time restrictions on viability.

Equine Cyro is currently in the process of becoming a  USDA-approved semen processing laboratories.

**We will be having a price increase effective 1-1-09.  The costs of overnighting the extender and pre-printed staws have escalated to where we can no longer absorb them.  We will of course try to minimize this increase to you.

Our Goals
  • To protect genetic integrity of your stallion.
  • To ensure your stallion's semen is safe while he is on the road.
  • To make breeding easy, just call & we will ship.

Everyone asks, how many doses will my stallion yeild in one colleciton?

The average stallion produces sufficient sperm on an every other day collection schedule to produce 8-12 doses of frozen semen. Depending on sperm production of the individual stallion, this number may vary from 2 to 40 doses per collection. Typically 2 to 3 doses are used per estrous cycle, therefore each collection provides enough frozen semen to inseminate through 5-6 cyclesf stored properly, frozen semen can maintain viability for many years.
frozen semen can maintain viability for many years.
We are frequently asked how long will the semen last?
Frozen semen is stored immersed in liquid nitrogen at -320oF (-197oC). At this temperature, metabolism is virtually halted, and little to no degradation of the semen occurs. No one knows the ultimate lifespan of properly stored frozen equine semen
Will My Stallion Freeze??
Not all stallions can be frozen successfully. Based on studies conducted in Europe and by those performed by Select Breeders Service, approximately 30% of all stallions produce sperm that are unable to withstand the stresses of freezing and thawing using current technology

What  makes frozen semen a good alternative to fresh cooled semen?

Frozen semen allows competition stallions to continue to compete during the breeding season without interruption of a semen collection schedule. Frozen semen can also be a much more economical alternative to cooled semen for many stallions. Additionally, the stallion owner is relieved of many of the burdens associated with managing a transported semen breeding program. Once you have booked the mares, our experienced professional staff handles all the details of the shipments and breedings. If you wish, your mare owners or their veterinarians may contact us directly to arrange shipments, or we can process shipment request forms directly from you. The choice is yours! Either way our staff is here to process the orders and provide technical assistance so that semen is shipped the same day as the request is received.
